Lesson: Possessive Nouns

Grade Level: First
Purpose: Students will be able to identify and write belonging or ownership of items in their reading and writing.
Materials Used:
  1. Suitcase full of personal belongings including:
    1. A shirt
    2. Two Remote Controls
    3. A laptop and it’s charger.

Reflection: This lesson went very well with my first grade class. Having the physical items with me during my lesson aided their understanding in possessive nouns. The students were were able to distinguish between singular and plural possessives, as well as form a rudimentary understanding of possessive pronouns.

Lesson: Mommy Doesn’t Know My Name

Grade Level: First
Purpose: Students will be able to understand that some phrases of speech, or words, are idioms. Sometimes they have other meanings, sometimes they do not.
Materials Used:
  1. Mommy Doesn’t Know My Name, written by Suzanne Williams and illustrated by Andrew Shachat
  2. “Mommy Doesn’t Know My Name” worksheet

Reflection: This lesson was a great success and the students loved it. The students liked to make predictions about what the main character would say after her mother called her a nickname, such “little devil” or “chickadee.”
